Is Skincare MORE Than Just Topicals? Five Effective (and free) Beauty Tips That Go Beyond Your Skin

Published by Ellaquor on Jun 21st 2022

It seems we will try just about anything to achieve our desired skin goals and many are willing to open up their wallets in order to do so. With so much information available on the internet, it can be overwhelming trying to sift through the market to sort the gimmicks from the effective products.

The reality is that while highly beneficial products packed with impressive nutrients DO exist, topical products only account for a small portion of helping you reach your skin goals. Of course this only begs the question… what else can we do to reach optimal skin health?

We’re here to share five effective, and free, beauty tips that go beyond your skin.

1. EAT WELL

While being mindful of what we eat increases our energy level and helps keep our skin smooth and vibrant, the regular intake of oily foods or a diet high in sugar has the opposite effect. It can result in inflammation and acne, premature aging, and other skin problems, all of which weaken our protective skin barrier.

Research on the diet-skin connection is clear that what you eat can directly impact the health and aging of your skin. Read our full blog on to learn easy and healthy substitutes to boost your complexion.

2. HYDRATE

The biggest contributor to glowing and healthy skin is water. Odds are that if you have dull skin, you are probably not drinking enough water. If the skin is not adequately hydrated, it becomes dry and it will appear dull.

Our bodies are made from a certain percentage of water. Over time, our ability to retain water decreases which leads to aging. Think of what happens to a grape as it dries out- it will eventually shrivel and transform into a raisin. Even though we can appreciate the sweet goodness of a raisin, we aren't so keen on repeating the behavior with our own skin. This means staying hydrated should be a priority- move it to the top of your list! In order to keep your skin looking young and supple, drink plenty of water each day. You can even "eat" your water with natural foods that hold water like melons, grapes, strawberries, pineapple, peaches, celery, etc.

3. MEDITATE

Like a candle, meditation shines your light. And the more you meditate, the more you glow. Indeed, happiness comes from the inside out. Meditating for just a few minutes every day brings energy into your body and creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. During meditation, prana (breathwork) helps repair your body’s tissues and cells which give skin a fresh, youthful glow.

Also, mindful breathing while meditating adds oxygen to the skin, which is key in boosting cellular health. This increased oxygen rejuvenates your skin, balancing your body and your mind while transforming your body’s cells and tissues.

It improves your complexion, reduces wrinkles and slows down the aging process from the inside out. Meditation also lowers blood pressure and tension-related pain such as headaches, ulcers, insomnia, muscle aches and joint problems, making you look and feel younger.

4. EXERCISE

Whether you’re a yogi, a gym rat, or something in between, keeping the body engaged and in motion is a great way to fight back against the harmful effects of stress, and protect our skin from looking stressed. Don’t feel like you’re out of your league when it comes to this part of your daily routine. Just getting out in the fresh air increases the oxygen flow in our bodies, strengthening the immune system and improving brain function. Going outside for a walk is enough to stimulate the production of endorphins in the brain and provide stress relief. Starting with 10 minutes a day can create positive changes in your overall state of mind which translates into an improved appearance as well.

5. SLEEP WELL

Beauty sleep is a real thing people, we aren’t joking around here. When you sleep, your body is working to heal itself and rejuvenate. And your body can’t relax and revitalize your skin cells if you aren’t getting adequate sleep. On average, it is recommended that adults get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. With a life full of hustle and bustle and never-ending to-do lists, we understand that 8 hours of sleep may be hard to obtain. But trust us, your skin needs time to heal and rest, it is absolutely and without a doubt necessary if you want to kick your dull skin to the curve and replace it with beautiful radiant skin. Now if this sounds like a truly impossible task for you, there are things that you can do to help induce good and long sleep. Our pro-tips include drinking a warm cup of alternative milk (whether that be almond milk, oat milk, or whatever your preference), limiting electronics before bed, or meditating for 10 minutes right before you get into bed.
