4 Ways You Can Restore Your Skin Right Now.

Jun 18th 2019

Do you ever look in the mirror and think, “Ugh, my skin needs a tune up?”

I have! After a stressful day, a restless night with my daughter or even after enjoying a lovely day outside, my skin could use a little perk, lift, and some glow.

Viola! We have 4 ways you can perk up and restore up your skin right now!

Tip #1 – Use a Face Mask

Face Masks are great ways to gently exfoliate, brighten, and nourish tired faces.

Face masks are really easy to make at home with simple kitchen ingredients. There are some great Ayurvedic recipes on Practo.com by Dr. Sharad Kulkarni. If you are opting to brighten your skin with his first recipe, simply sub maple syrup in place of honey to make the recipe vegan. (Maple Syrup has great antioxidant properties, and can help fight inflammation, dryness, redness, and wrinkles!) Be sure it is pure maple syrup, not maple flavored syrup, to get the full benefits.

Once you make your face mask, apply it to your face for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse off with cool water. You want to use cool water as it tones the skin (reducing the effects of age on skin) and helps restore the skin from damage from the sun.

Face masks shouldn’t be used every day, but you can easily use them 1-2x/week to help revive your skin when it needs a little extra love, or as little as 1x/month for preventative regular care. Enjoy the GLOW!

Tip #2 – Learn to Love Cooler Water

I remember camping in New Mexico, and as hot as it was in summer, the 5am freezing cold showers were never welcome – but considering the harsh conditions, my skin still glowed – cool water is actually much better for your skin the steamy showers are!

Hot water dries out your skin, stripping it of natural moisture. If your soap contains harsh chemicals, fragrances, or deodorants, it can worsen the problem.

Cool Water helps constrict blood vessels, reducing redness, and tightens the skin. Its okay to use lukewarm water to wash your face, but splash some cool water on after before applying your moisturizer – your skin will thank you and feel fresh and revitalized!

Tip #3 – Gentle Face Massage

In yoga, I’m notorious for placing my forehead down on my yoga mat and rolling my head left to right, massaging my forehead and eyebrows.

It feels. SO. Good!

Why does rubbing your forehead feel good? Well, this is because your face is full of muscles that lie beneath the skin. These muscles help you smile, frown, scrunch your eyebrows and open your eyes wide, among other facial movements, and just like your shoulders or your hamstrings, these muscles get tight!

A gentle, circular face massage can help relax the face, stimulate blood flow, and rejuvenate your skin. It also relieves stress, reduce wrinkles (which can be caused by muscle tension), eliminate toxins built up on your face, and reduce congestion!

In other words, your skin will glow AND feel better!

Self.com has a great step by step format on how to give yourself a good face massage. They start with some basic pre-massage tips:

First- Prep your Skin. Wash your hands, tie back your hair, and gently wash your face with a gentle cleanser.

Next – Consider doing facial massage when you wash your face daily, or apply your daily moisturizer. (If your not applying daily moisturizer, please see Tip #4!)

Now - Choose the right product to massage into your skin. You will help the absorption of the product with the massage, so a serum, all natural moisturizer, or an oil would be a great choice to use.

Next – Choose your pressure. Pressure is the amount of force you apply to the skin. To increase skin firmness, use deep motions. If your skin is sensitive, acne prone, or oily, try lighter pressure. Another benefit besides glowing skin from a face massage? You stimulate lymphatic drainage (reduction of toxins inside the body), which can invigorate your immune system.

Always – Avoid the eye area. The skin around your eyes is very sensitive, and it can’t handle much pressure. If your eyes are puffy, you can help alleviate this with gentle, light rolling movements with your ring finger from the tear ducts to the outer corners of the eye.

NOW – here is how to give yourself a facial massage:

1.Use a small amount of product, like oil or lotion, and rub it into your hands and fingers.

2.Put your index fingers between your eyebrows, and slide them in opposite directions across your forehead. Repeat several times to cover the whole area.

3.Next, take your fingers back between your eyebrows, and slide them down the outside of your nose and across your cheeks, going in opposite directions, following the cheek bone.

4.Drop a fingertip lower than the cheekbone and repeat the motion.

5.Continue to start at the center of your face and slide your fingertips in opposite directions, going above the lip, then to the corners of your mouth, to right under your lip, above the chin, and at the chin.

6.Finish with your neck. We suggest using a downward motion from the jaw line.

Your skin will feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and will glow! You can also do circular motions at your temples to help relieve stress – just keep away from moving the skin by the eyes!

Tip #4 – Develop a daily skin care routine.

Taking care of your skin daily will always increase its look, feel, and health – as long as you choose products that are good for your skin. Check out our article about how to start a skin care routine!

Start with a cleanser that works best for you. Some people like oil based cleansers to help break up makeup and dirt on the skin. Other options are naturally exfoliating cleaners, or simple soaps, but it is important to take off impurities from your skin – especially if you wear sunscreen or makeup.

A toner should be used between washing and moisturizing. We love rosewater, but there are a lot of options out there as well. Toners help hydrate, nourish, PH balance, and detoxify skin.

Moisturize your skin with a product that is all natural and that works with your skin type, and for the time of day you are applying.

Often times, it is good to choose multiple products from the same brand, as they work well together, that have the right properties for your skin. Skin that is too dry will benefit from moisturizers that can help lock in it skin’s own natural moisture. Skin that is too oily will benefit from products that help balance your natural oil production. Be wary of products that simply add moisture or dry up your skin for you – you want your skin care products to work with your body, not for it.

These tips have all been tested in the Ellaquor Lab and will help you restore your skin. What will you do first? Feel the glow and let us know!
