3 Essential Oils That You Didn’t Know Moisturize Your Skin

Jul 18th 2019

Who wants gorgeous, hydrated skin? Answer: WE ALL DO! If you are anything like me, then you have spent years cycling through different skin care products that all promise moisturized and glowing skin. But after countless half-used bottles of products that end up forgotten and stuffed somewhere under my bathroom sink, I realized that the reason I wasn’t getting the results I wanted was because the ingredients in my moisturizers didn’t have any actual moisturizing properties or contained chemically derived ingredients that counteracted the hydrating ones. My skin finally got the dewy, silky look I was searching for when I found these three superhero essential oils that not only hydrate- they also have other amazing benefits for your skin. The next time you are in the market for a moisturizing skin care product, check the ingredients list and look for these three essential oils.

1) Myrrh Essential Oil

If you have dry, chapped, or cracked skin, then myrrh essential oil is a MUST in your moisturizer. Myrrh is an all-natural resin or gum (think sap-like) that is derived from the Commiphora myrrha tree. Myrrh essential oil has many benefits and properties that range from killing bacteria to combating swelling, but one benefit that really sticks out is its moisturizing properties. Myrrh essential oil deeply moisturizes the skin and rejuvenates skin cells through stimulated circulation. Not only that, but it tightens the skin and helps it retain moisture, thereby preventing any further dryness, chapping, and cracking. A double whammy! Myrrh essential oil goes deeper than the surface to not only moisturize your skin, but to heal it as well. A research study back in 2010 found that topical application of myrrh essential oil lead to faster healing of skin cells due to the fact that myrrh stimulates the production of white blood cells.

Fun Fact about Myrrh Essential Oil: The Ancient Egyptians used to derive myrrh from the distinctive white flowered Commiphora myrrha tree to help prevent aging (because who doesn’t love that), rejuvenate, and maintain healthy skin.

2) Lemon Essential Oil

They always say ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade’, but what they should be staying is ‘When life give you lemons, put it in your moisturizer!!!!!!!’ Whoever decided to move lemons from the lemonade stand outside to our beauty regimens in the bathroom was a genius. Lemons are an outstanding source of vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and calcium – all of which are antioxidants and minerals that dramatically improve the condition and appearance of not only our skin, but our hair and nails too! (An added bonus J) Lemon essential oil brightens ashy and dull-looking skin while also helping to inhibit the reactions of free radicals that are responsible for skin aging. Lemon essential oil goes deep in the skin to hydrate and revitalize for an all-around healthier looking complexion.

Pro-Tip: If lemon essential oil is a key ingredient in your moisturizer, make sure to use that one at night as lemon essential oil is photosensitive and should never be worn before heavy sun exposure.

3) Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil is extracted from the geranium plant through the flowers, stems, and leaves. Geranium essential oil is ideal for all skin types, whether you have oily or dry skin (or even if you fall somewhere in between). This is because it helps balance the production of sebum in the skin. This means that geranium essential oil regulates and moisturizes the skin. Not only is geranium essential oil versatile for all skin types but it is also non-toxic, and non-irritating. It’s a gentle oil that won’t irritate your skin or cause you any unwanted problems. It also enhances skin with its soothing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. All in all, it can really boost skin health.

DIY Recipe: Try adding two drops of geranium essential oil to your daily face and/or body wash for an extra moisturizing and nourishing boost for your skin.
